Etsy Relevancy Search Explained in Laments terms

Posted by Cristina Barnes on October 17, 2011 at 8:55 AM

Many of you by now know that Etsy has changed the default search pages to Relevancy instead of Recently listed. This has caused a major uproar in the seller’s community because no one really knows how to go about standing out anymore.

So I’m here to explain to the best of my ability my findings in this matter  I’m right there with you guys and have spent weeks trying to figure out business as a whole and of course Etsy as that is where the majority of my sales come from. I’m really hoping that this post will 1) makes sense to you and 2) it helps you better understand the changes to Etsy.

Well in the past when we have all listed on Etsy the biggy was to have a Catchy title with a nice photo and a couple of times a day we would renew our listing to stay on top of the game. That doesn’t work the way it use to anymore because searches are based on Relevancy. Yes this helps the buyer get to what they want faster with less searching thru hundreds of pages.

But what is Relevancy? And how do I use it to increase views and sales? To best explain Relevancy in laments terms it is a search of Relevant items that the buyer is searching for. If you put yourself in buyer’s shoes you will easily title and tag your item  You have to get creative with your title. Before you would title your item with something catchy to draw the buyers attention. But now you pretty much have to use the title as tags. Where in the past you may have titled something Beautiful Cardigan for a Newborn now you may want to title it Newborn Girl Pink Cardigan Merino Wool. Because as a shopper you know that when you type in the search box you don’t type titles you type characteristics that you are looking for. Also choose the first words of your description carefully to also have searchable attributes and be sure to check how it will appear on Google searches. Your tags should also be written in the mindset of your buyer try to squeeze in there as much as you can to make the most out of the tags. One last thing if you sell several like items don’t just copy make each one different Google will like you better! I personally always have at least 2 similar listings. One I use as a “control” listing and then the other one I play with tags, title and category and watch the number of views once I see numbers climbing I know I have a winner!

Call to Action: Go to your shop and start working on your titles and tags.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on my post and if you have anything to add please feel free to comment!

Have a wonderful day!
